Meet the Art and Design Lead

Hello, I’m Miss Clanchy, and it’s been my pleasure to lead Art and Design at our school for the past three years. I hold a BA in Primary Education with a specialism in Art and Design, and I’m passionate about helping children unlock their creativity and build confidence in their artistic abilities. I believe in fostering children’s artistic intelligence by encouraging them to create visually compelling work and supporting their self-discovery through art. I love guiding them in thinking through materials and enhancing their aesthetic experiences. Introducing children to both local and renowned artists inspires them to explore diverse styles and cultures, broadening their understanding of the world. Outside the classroom, I love creating art myself—particularly through drawing and sculpture—and I find inspiration from visiting art galleries. My aim is to help every child recognise what makes Art and Design unique, see the world in new ways, and embark on their own creative journey with both confidence and imagination.

Our Vision for Art and Design

Our art and design curriculum is inspired by the values that everyone is different, everyone is special, and everyone is our neighbour. Pupils explore a rich variety of artistic traditions, styles, and cultures, deepening their understanding and appreciation of diversity in all its forms. We nurture each child’s creativity and self-expression, recognising that everyone has unique gifts to share through art. By fostering collaboration and empathy, we encourage pupils to use art as a means to connect with others, promote justice, and care for the world around them. Through art and design, we inspire hope and celebrate the beauty of individuality and community.

Art and Design Teaching and Learning

Our Art and Design curriculum nurtures creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking, helping children develop confidence in their artistic abilities. We emphasise what makes art unique, encouraging students to explore a wide range of media and techniques while developing their artistic intelligence. Through hands-on experiences, children learn to ‘think through and within a material,’ refining their skills over time. They study local and renowned artists for inspiration, understanding how art and design communicate ideas and emotions. A clear progression of skills within each media focus ensures that techniques are revisited and built upon, enabling children to develop increasing confidence, control, and creativity.

Assessment in Art and Design

Assessment in Art and Design focuses on both the creative journey and the development of skills. We encourage children to explain their methods and the intent behind their artwork, reflecting on what their work means and how they have achieved their outcomes. Feedback is given throughout the process, supporting children in refining their ideas and techniques. Opportunities to share their work, such as exhibitions and displays, allow children to celebrate their progress, build confidence, and appreciate the value of artistic expression within our school community.
