I’m Mrs Wright, and I’ve had the pleasure of leading French at our school for the past three years. I began my career as a teacher of English as a second language, and I firmly believe that all children can and should learn a second language. While I am not a fluent French speaker myself, I have experience learning languages—having studied Portuguese while living in Portugal and learning some Italian thanks to my Italian sister-in-law. I am passionate about making language learning accessible and enjoyable for all children, and I aim to inspire a love for languages that will serve them throughout their lives.

Our French curriculum is shaped by the principles that everyone is different, everyone is special, and everyone is our neighbour. Pupils explore the richness of French language and culture, deepening their understanding of diversity and the connections between different societies. By developing each child’s unique communication skills and confidence in using a new language, we nurture their potential to engage with the wider world. Through fostering curiosity and empathy, pupils are encouraged to build bridges across cultures, promote respect, and celebrate shared humanity.

Our French curriculum aims to develop a love of languages and build pupils’ confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We use the La Jolie Ronde scheme of work to ensure clear progression and coverage of key skills from Year 3 onwards. Lessons are engaging and interactive, helping children develop their vocabulary and understanding of French culture. While formal teaching begins in Key Stage 2, younger children may be introduced to the language through fun games and songs, fostering early enthusiasm for language learning.
