What to Expect in Reception Class
Reception is a joyful and exciting place where children learn through play, developing the foundations for a lifelong love of learning. Play is at the heart of their experience, helping them to build confidence, independence, and important interpersonal skills. Through self-directed exploration, they make discoveries, solve problems, and express their creativity. Alongside this, children take part in whole-class and small-group sessions tailored to their needs, where they begin to develop early literacy, maths, and communication skills. As they learn how to be part of a community, they form friendships, practise kindness, and begin to understand what it means to live out our Christian vision of Everyone is different; everyone is special. Reception is a magical year, full of curiosity, wonder, and the first steps on an exciting learning journey.
The Reception Curriculum
Our Reception curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, providing a rich and engaging learning experience that supports children’s development across seven key areas:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Through a balance of play-based learning and carefully planned adult-led activities, children develop essential skills and knowledge in a way that is meaningful and engaging. They explore stories, develop early maths concepts, investigate the world around them, and express their creativity through art, music, and imaginative play. Our curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity, independence, and a love of learning, ensuring that every child is ready for the next stage of their education.
