What to Expect in Year 4

Year 4 is a year of growing independence and maturity, as children take on new challenges and exciting opportunities. One of the highlights of the year is the weekly swimming lessons, where children develop confidence in the water and work towards key swimming milestones. Another memorable experience is the three-night residential, where they build resilience, teamwork, and a sense of adventure. Alongside these experiences, children engage in a rich and varied curriculum, deepening their understanding across all subjects. They are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, developing the skills they need to succeed both academically and personally. Year 4 is a time of discovery, growth, and building the confidence to embrace new experiences.

The Year 4 Curriculum

The Year 4 curriculum at St Andrew’s offers a rich and balanced learning experience, ensuring children develop across a wide range of subjects. In addition to engaging topics in history, geography, and science, children also enhance their skills in English, mathematics, art, music, computing, and physical education. In English, pupils read a variety of inspiring texts, which help to develop their reading, writing, and comprehension skills. Mathematics lessons focus on key areas, with particular emphasis on times tables, in preparation for the statutory Year 4 Times Tables Check. To ensure confidence and fluency, children practise their times tables regularly through fun and interactive activities. The curriculum is designed to challenge, inspire, and equip children with the knowledge and skills they need for the future, fostering a love of learning across all areas.
